A Covington man is undergoing a mental evaluation at the St. Tammany Parish hospital after a standoff with SWAT team members early Wednesday morning.
It began after the unidentified man's father called 911 around 1 a.m. to say his son was suicidal and left their home in the 71000 block of Lake Placid Road with a shotgun.
When deputies arrived, they made contact with the man's girlfriend who told them he was with her and no longer armed. She tried to bring him back home, but when he saw the patrol cars, he jumped out of her car and fled for nearby woods. An attempt to find him was unsuccessful.
Deputies returned the home when the father called back to say his son had barricaded himself in the bathroom with the shotgun. After refusing to cooperate, the SWAT team was called to the scene.
When the man tried to leave through the rear of the home, he was taken into custody without injury by the SWAT team, according to the St. Tammany Sheriff's Office.
