The CVS drugstore chain has proposed building a store in the Lower 9th Ward and it would represent the first investment by a major retailer in the neighborhood since Hurricane Katrina.
The 13,225 square foot store would be located on North Claiborne Avenue at Forstall Street, a block that includes an abandoned gas station. CVS currently operates 8 other stores in the city.
The project will require some zoning changes and must go through the Neighborhood Participation Plan process. A public meeting on the proposal has been scheduled September 3, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the MLK Charter School on North Claiborne.
CVS wants to begin construction in early 2015 and open the store by next summer.
“It’s been a long nine years since Hurricane Katrina,” said District E Councilman James A. Gray. “ But with this CVS commitment to our community, the Claiborne Corridor is now poised for revitalization."
"We thank CVS/pharmacy for bringing shopping convenience to the neighborhood and we look forward to partnering with them in the comeback of the historic Lower Nine.”
