58 French Quarter business owners have agreed to contribute $200 or more per week to fund the hiring of three to four off-duty police officers to provide extra security.

Bourbon Street bar owner, Earl Bernhardt told FOX 8, "that's a lot of money, but if we don't do it, it could cost a lot more in lost business."  The owner of the Tropical Isle and other bars in the French Quarter added, "we felt like we had no other choice."

The French Quarter Business League began discussing the idea in the wake of a June 29 shooting incident on Bourbon Street that left a woman dead and nine other persons injured.

The businesses collectively will contribute over $10,000 per week for the enhanced security.

The plan, which will go into effect when an expanded force of state troopers leaves after Labor Day, will be re-evaluated after a period of six months.
