A Mississippi man has been charged with stealing over $4,000 from a fund set up to provide scholarships in the name of a UNO student who died in an automobile accident earlier this year.

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office says 29-year-old Jonathan Holcomb, the manager of a Slidell sporting goods store, set up a fundraising walk/run in April to benefit the fund created in the name of Haley Howard who was killed when her car  crashed into the Irish Bayou last March.

When those who set up the fund checked the account in June, they discovered that $4,340 had been removed without authorization.  Investigators allege Holcomb had withdrawn the funds with checks, cash withdrawals and electronic transfers.

Holcomb, a resident of Carriere, allegedly admitted to taking the money and was charged with theft of over one thousand dollars.
