A suspect in the death of New Orleans Police Officer Rodney Thomas has pleaded guilty to his role in covering up the incident.

The New Orleans Advocate reports Bill Cager pleaded guilty Friday in criminal court to being an accessory to manslaughter and other counts.

Thomas was killed early July 7, 2013. He was on his way home from work when he was involved in a minor accident on Interstate 10. He was struck as he got out of his car to check on the other driver.

Cager received a suspended sentence on each count. He had already spent a year in jail and was released Friday.

Prosecutors say Cager hid the car that struck Thomas in his body shop, knowing it had been driven in a fatal hit-and-run.
