The school zones are in effect on this first day of school in St. Tammany Parish, and Slidell Police have implemented a plan to remind motorists of that fact.

"I'm putting extra officers out, paying overtime, to put the units, the police marked vehicles, in the school zones with their lights on, just to help remind people," says Slidell Police Chief Randy Smith.

Smith tells 99.5 WRNO that for the next two weeks, officers will issue warnings to motorists caught speeding in a school zone. After that, citations will be issued for violations.

Police will also be enforcing a new state law that bans the use of any wireless device, like a cell phone or a computer, while driving through school zones.

"So there's no texting, no talking, no type of electronic device can be used anymore while traveling through a school zone," Smith said.
