State troopers on patrol in New Orleans interrupted what they say was a murder attempt around 1 a.m Wednesday beneath the Pontchartrain Expressway.
The troopers spotted two men involved in an altercation under the overpass at Calliope and Simon Bolivar and saw one of the men fire a handgun at the other.
The alleged gunman, 35-year-old Cleveland Bell, fled into the neighborhood and was later found hiding under a house. Troopers recovered a firearm and a quantity of crack cocaine from a neighboring vacant lot.
Bell has been charged with attempted murder and armed robbery. Authorities say he was wanted on an active warrant for home invasion.
State Police Superintendent Mike Edmonson says his troopers did exactly what they were challenged to do: "be proactive, be visible, be observant, respond quickly and take decisive action."
The incident remains under investigation.
