The New Orleans City Council has narrowly approved an ordinance that clears the way for the introduction of Uber Black service in the city.

The app-based transportation service uses luxury cars and professional drivers.

The vote was 4-3, with James Gray, Susan Guidry and Nadine Ramsey voting against the measure.

The proposal approved Thursday removes a requirement that limos be reserved for at least 3 hours.  The law also set minimum fares of $15 for luxury sedans, $25 for SUVs, and $45 for all other luxury vehicles

The minimum fare for a sedan trip to or from the airport is $75.  The minimum rate for an airport trip for SUVs and other luxury vehicles is $90.

“Having good, reliable transportation options is important for our residents, businesses and visitors,” said Mayor Mitch Landrieu.

“Today’s vote is a great step for adapting our laws to the technology changes and innovations occurring in the transportation industry globally. We are committed to creating the best for-hire industry in the country.”
