Many of America's beaches have a pollution problem. An annual report from the Natural Resources Defense Council says roughly ten percent of the country's beaches fail federal benchmarks for what is considered safe swimming water. Beaches on the Great Lakes showed the highest levels of pollution, followed by the Gulf Coast, New England and the West Coast. Most of the pollution is caused by storm water runoff and sewage overflow, which puts disease-causing bacteria in the water.
