Crash On Endymion Route Injures 28 Parade Viewers

The NOPD says 21 persons were taken to hospitals Saturday night after a truck crashed into people attending the Endymion parade at Orleans and Carrollton Avenues in New Orleans.

Another 7 persons who were injured declined hospital treatment.

A silver pickup truck reportedly was heading toward City Park on Carrollton when it crossed struck at least two other vehicles and crossed over into the neutral ground.

The crash occurred around 6:45 p.m.

The injured were transported by EMS workers to seven different hospitals.  Several of the victims were critically injured. One of those hurt was a 3-year-old child and another was a female NOPD officer.  Neither of those victims were believed to have suffered injuries that were life-threatening.

NOPD Superintendent Miohael Harrison said the driver of the pickup, who was arrested, appeared to be "highly intoxicated."

While the lanes of Carrollton headed toward Canal Street were closed to accommodate the parade, the lanes headed in the other direction had been left open to traffic.
