DOTD Engineer Says Sunshine Bridge Should Have Collapsed

A state transportation department engineer says that a computer model run of damage caused to the Sunshine Bridge when a barge crashed into it last year indicates the structure should have collapsed.

That's what David Miller told a federal panel Thursday in Gonzales that's investigating the incident.

He says damage to a key support beam could have brought the bridge spanning the Mississippi River down.

Fortunately, it didn't, but the damage did lead to the temporary closure of the span and repairs that wrapped up in March.
