State Officials: Over 85,000 Workers Won't Qualify For New Benefits

State officials say over 85,000 workers in Louisiana are probably not eligible to receive new benefits ordered by the President.

Governor Edwards said yesterday that the extra $300 in benefits per unemployed worker should be ready to distribute next week, but thousands do not qualify for the aid.

Economists say President Trump's order requires states to put up a $100 match on the funds, making nearly 70,000 workers receiving less than that a week and 20,000 others not listing COVID-19 as the reason for job loss ineligible for more money.

Edwards says the benefits office will be reaching out to those who can't get the extra funds.
