The school day in Jefferson Parish is about to lengthen by 30 minutes.

Louisiana's largest public school system asked families and employees in a survey Saturday whether to add a half hour for 51 days or 71 days.

The two options listed by the system are:

  • Option A: Adds 30 minutes to the end of the instructional school day and employee work day for 51 days, beginning November 16, 2020 - February 12, 2021. This option adds November 23 and 24 to the Thanksgiving holiday.
  • Option B: Adds 30 minutes to the end of the instructional school day and employee work day for 71 days, beginning November 16, 2020 - March 26, 2021. This Option adds November 23 and 24 to the Thanksgiving holiday AND POSSIBLY adds February 18 and 19 to Mardi Gras break if no additional closures occur for inclement weather days. If inclement weather days require closures, February 18 and 19 will become school/work days.
  • *Note: Both Option A and Option B add January 4 to the Academic Calendar as an instructional school day and employee work day

Both options would let some days previously listed as school days be converted to holidays during the weeks of Thanksgiving and Mardi Gras.

The system asks for people to respond by 3 p.m. today.
