Transgender girls and women can continue participating on women's athletic teams in Louisiana.

Gov. John Bel Edwards on Tuesday vetoed the bill that would have made participation in women's athletics limited to biological females or those listed as female on their birth certificates.

Edwards said the bill is discriminatory, and there are no cases of transgender athletes trying to play in women's or girl's sports in the state.

Edwards also said if made law, the bill would hurt the state's chances of hosting future NCAA and professional sporting events, including the 2022 Final Four to be played in New Orleans.
