New Orleans police are investigating the fatal shooting of a two-year-old at a home on Apple Street in the Hollygrove area.

Fire crews responded to the scene after 6 p.m. but nobody was home.

Police then got a call about a two-year-old at a children's hospital with a gunshot wound. The child was pronounced dead.

The shooting was at first described as accidental, possibly the result of playing with a gun. Later reports indicate it actually happened during a domestic dispute.

NOPD clarified on Thursday they now believe the toddler may have accidentally taken his own life.

Supt. Shaun Ferguson told reports the two-year-old somehow got his hands on a gun and pulled the trigger.

Police talked with the boy's parents but no arrests have been made.
