Following Tuesday's election, New Orleans City Council will have to confirm city agency department heads appointed by the mayor.

Voters approved of the change to the city charter with 62 percent of the vote.

Mayor LaToya Cantrell opposed the measure as power grab by council members. The measure's opponents also described it as a violation of the separation of powers.

Council members who support the change say it will help protect city services from mismanagement by unqualified political appointees.
