A new ordinance will hold adult New Orleans residents responsible for kids who get ahold of guns.

On Thursday, City Council members approved an ordinance allowing adults to be arrested for careless storage of a firearm.

Violators could be sentenced to six months or more in jail and be fined $500 or more.

Councilman Oliver Thomas proposed the ordinance, saying ten kids in 2021 and nine kids in 2022 were accidentally shot and killed in New Orleans.

The ordinance now goes to Mayor LaToya Cantrell for her signature.
