The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says a Metairie family will be allowed to keep their pet nutria.

The Lacoste family has had Neuty around the house for two years. But a local news story brought him to the attention of state wildlife officials, who wanted to remove the 22-pound rodent, because it's illegal to keep them as pets.

The plan was to move Neuty to the Baton Rouge Zoo. But after more than 20,000 people signed an online petition, wildlife officials said the Lacostes can keep the nutria after all.

LDWF Sec. Jack Montoucet said Friday the owners have applied for a permit and that LDWF has provided special conditions under which Neuty can remain with them.

“I think this is a good conclusion for all sides,” Secretary Montoucet said.
