Gretna officials are preparing for the saltwater wedge heading up the Mississippi river, now about four weeks away.

The city council met in emergency session on Thursday.

Gretna is the only city in Jefferson Parish with its own water supply.

Mayor Belinda Constant has requested the Jefferson Parish Emergency Operations Center to transport water via barges, and has asked for bottled water assistance from state officials and FEMA.

The city is also taking steps to bring in 18-wheelers to stockpile bottled water.
