The Board of Pardons and prosecutors from across Louisiana are reportedly close to reaching a settlement concerning clemency hearings for death row inmates.

The deal would reportedly mean most of the 57 death row inmates at Angola will be ineligible for clemency hearings.

The number of eligible inmates may be reduced to fewer than ten.

Gov. John Bel Edwards stated that he wanted the condemned inmates to have their death sentences converted to life without parole.

District attorneys statewide oppose the idea.
