Car thieves are busy in New Orleans this year.

Data from the Metropolitan Crime Commission shows nearly 6,900 cars and trucks stolen in the city as of December 17, compared to nearly 4,100 as of the same time last year.

That's an increase of about 69 percent, and adds up to about 20 vehicles stolen every day.

At the same time, violent crime in New Orleans has decreased significantly over the past year.

Since most auto thefts happen overnight, it may be hours before the victims notice and report the crime.
