State officials are considering a hunting season for the Louisiana black bear.

The animal was placed on the threatened species list in 1992, but since that time, its population has grown from fewer than 400 to more than 1,200.

In recent years, black bears are turning up in the Capital Region, including North Baton Rouge and Port Allen.

Bear hunting will be limited to the northeastern part of the state, where their population is densest.
