Gov. John Bel Edwards gave his final State of the State address to open the state legislative session Monday.

Edwards touted the state's accomplishments over his eight years in office, such as turning the budget deficit into a surplus and an unemployment rate under four percent.

The governor went on to advocate for his top priorities this session, including a $3,000 pay raise for teachers and legislation for paid family and medical leave.

He also asked lawmakers to end the death penalty in Louisiana.

Edwards went on to thank the state for allowing him to serve.
