Worker dies on oil rig in Gulf of Mexico

The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement and the U.S. Coast Guard are investigating the fatality of a drillship worker on an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico. The fatality occurred Saturday around 4:45 a.m. in an area of the Gulf, known as Walker Ridge, which is located about 172 miles south of Port Fourchon. 

Petrobras America, Inc, the offshore oil and gas operator, reported that the fatality took place on the Petrobras 10,000 drillship, which is owned by Transocean Ltd. 

The deceased individual was an employee for Spencer Ogden Ltd. and was participating in pipe handling operations when his injury occurred. No other workers were injured and no pollution occurred. 

BSEE is conducting a panel investigation while inspectors work to determine the cause. A safety alert has also been issued by the organization.
