Democrats Furious With Schumer For Caving To Republicans On Immigration

The day after Democrats and Republicans reached an agreement to re-open the government, many Democrats are not happy with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. According to Business Insider, many lawmakers and activists are not happy with the deal because it does not reinstate the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. As part of the deal, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell promised to hold a vote on an immigration reform bill.

Senator Kamala Harris, who was one of 18 senators who voted against the short-term funding bill, was not happy with the deal and said she does not trust McConnell to keep his promise.

I refuse to put the lives of nearly 700,000 young people in the hands of someone who has repeatedly gone back on his word

Senator Diane Feinstein, who also voted against the funding bill said "the solution is simple: a vote on the Dream Act as an amendment to a must-pass vehicle."

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said she could not support the bill either and wanted House Speaker Paul Ryan to promise he would also hold a vote on immigration reform.

Representative Luis Gutierrez emailed a statement to Washington Post reporter Ed O'Keefe that blasted Democrats who were "not willing to go to the mat to allow people in my community to live in our country legally."

This shows me that when it comes to immigrants, Latinos and their families, Democrats are still not willing to go to the mat to allow people in my community to live in our country legally.

Many Democratic activists are livid with politicians who caved on their demands that immigration reform be part of any compromise bill. Alida Garcia, who works for lobbying group FWD.us, took to Twitter to say she was leaving the Democratic party. She accused them of being "complicit w/ every single young person living in fear."
