Authorities are having to deal with a much smaller oil spill in the Mississippi River than was initially reported early Sunday about 40 miles upriver from New Orleans.

The potential size of the spill at the Pin Oak Terminals facility just north of Mount Airy was placed at just over 4,000 gallons, but Coast Guard responders later determined the spill involved only about 100 gallons of fuel oil.

The river remained open during the investigation.
