Governor John Bel Edwards is fondly remembering the decades of service that the late Republican Senator John McCain gave to this nation.

McCain lost his battle with brain cancer Saturday.

Edwards labeled McCain "one of our greatest statesmen" and called his death a "great loss."

The state's two GOP senators also weighed in on McCain's passing, Senator John Kennedy calling him an "original" and "tough as a boot," while Senator Bill Cassidy said that McCain "loved America and sacrificed his freedom and health to defend it."

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of New Orleans says McCain will be remembered as a man of service and sacrifice and that he defined "what it means to be an American hero."
