The city is tearing down a vacant building belonging to a local developer who recently received money from FEMA to rebuild.

Wilbert Thomas Sr. had been in negotiations with FEMA over money to redevelop a lot on the corner of Piety and Florida streets that was damaged during Hurricane Katrina.

Thomas said he was recently awarded the money and had been planning to build a pharmacy but was notified by a friend yesterday morning that his building was being torn down.

The city cites safety reasons for doing so.
