The New Orleans City Council is hoping to improve student safety on school buses with a new set of rules they're set to vote on next Thursday.

The proposed regulations came about after Mayor LaToya Cantrell's team conducted an audit over the summer that revealed safety violations such as emergency doors being bolted shut and seats not being bolted down to the floor.

Officials said issues with bus safety came about when the city moved to an all charter school system, leaving the charter organizations responsible for contracting with bus companies.
