Bill Abolishing Death Penalty Advances Out Of Committee To State House

Death penalty law and capital offense crimes

A bill that would abolish the death penalty in Louisiana is set to be debated by the state House.

The House Criminal Justice Committee narrowly cleared House Bill 215 on Tuesday, which would leave the death penalty in place for prisoners currently on death row but would get rid of the practice for future cases.

The bill advanced by an 8-to-7 vote.
