Just days ahead of the start of hurricane season, the New Orleans city-assisted evacuation plan is being put to the test.

The annual exercise looks at getting the city's most vulnerable residents from 17 designated evacuation sports across the city to safe shelter spaces before storms make landfall.

Officials say the city-assisted evacuation plan is meant as a last-resort for those who do not have family, friends or neighbors to evacuate with.

Anyone who may need to register for the special assistance program can do so at ready.nola.gov.
