A new lawsuit filed on behalf of residents in Gert Town is claiming authorities had prior knowledge of radioactive material recently found underneath a neighborhood street.

According to details of the lawsuit released yesterday, the plaintiffs allege the city of New Orleans knew about the dangerous material as far back as 2013 but did not clean it up.

The suit says those within three blocks of Lowerline Street where the substance was found were exposed to radiation from Radium-226.

Earlier this month, hazmat crews removed the radioactive material, but the area is still fenced off from the community.
