All Mississippi Gulf Coast Swimming Restricted Due To Algae

Welcome to Mississippi Gulf Coast Sign on Beach

Louisiana residents are being advised to avoid beaches along the Mississippi Gulf Coast because of toxic algae.

The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality announced over the weekend the beaches would remain open, but swimming and fishing were discouraged.

Officials said the algae is from the opening of the Bonnet Carre spillway which has increased the nutrients in the water that blooms feed on.

Algae on Lake Pontchartrain is also suspected of having come from the opening of the spillway.
