Proposal To Eliminate Money Bail At Criminal District Court

Bail bond. Corruption. Gavel, handcuffs and money.

A proposed plan would eliminate money bails at the Criminal District Court.

Members of the Criminal Justice Committee heard that plan yesterday, which would also get rid of court fines and fees for anyone who is arrested.

The plan was introduced by Vera Institute as they say the current system disadvantages those who are poor and requires people to buy their freedom.

It would ask judges to impose a bond of a few cents instead, but some say that would make judges ignore their oath of office.

It is unclear how city council feels about the plan.
