The owner of a former hotel located at Chef Menteur Highway and Interstate Ten says they are close to being able to renovate the building.

City Councilwoman Cyndi Nguyen said yesterday that she had spoken to owner Peter Gardner about the process, and he says he's in the last stages of acquiring financing to begin working on a restoration.

The hotel first opened as a Holiday Inn with about 200 guest rooms and has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places because of its mid-20th-century design.

Plans are now to covert the structure into either a new hotel or apartments with commercial retail space on the first floor.
