The city of New Orleans is demoting the official in charge of the New Orleans Department of Safety and Permits.

Zachary Smith was removed from his position on Monday but will stay with the department because he is the only one with the designation needed to clear building inspectors.

Smith's demotion comes following allegations that three city building inspectors falsified reports and approved sites without ever visiting them.

Smith has been with the Safety and Permits Department since 2008 and was named Director in 2018.
