Special NOPD Unit Patrolling For Illegal Gatherings During Stay Home Order

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell says the police department will create a specialized team of officers to patrol for illegal gatherings.

Cantrell issued a city-wide stay at home order one day before Governor Edwards announced a state-wide order would go into effect at 5 p.m. today.

Cantrell says the ensure the safety of the community, the NOPD will work with the city's Safety and Permits office to enforce the order, and businesses found in violation could lose their license to operate.

There are over 650 positive cases of coronavirus and 18 deaths in Orleans, Jefferson, and St. Tammany parishes.
