Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman is getting his jail back but the lockup will remain under a court-mandated reform plan for the time being.
On Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Lance Africk approved Gusman's request to retake control of the jail after testimony revealed that the facility had been chaotic and violent.
Despite the improvements, Africk says that violence remained frequent, staffing shortages were a concern and suicide precautions were lacking, which is why they are continuing the reform plan.
Gusman hasn't said whether he'll submit another request to end the current standing.
