The Louisiana Department of Health reported an additional 2,976 COVID-19 cases Wednesday, bringing the total number of reported cases since the pandemic began to 293,934.

LDH also updated the number of presumed recovered from the coronavirus to 247,501 as of December 21. That is an increase of 14,776 from last week's update.

Hospitals are treating 1,675 COVID-19 patients, an increase of 28 overnight. Of those, 196 are on ventilators, 15 more than Tuesday.

The death toll rose by 68 to 7,226. LDH noted this was the highest number of deaths reported in a single day since 69 deaths on July 29.

Gov. John Bel Edwards announced Tuesday that Louisiana will remain in a modified Phase 2 through January 13, 2021 to try and slow the spread of the coronavirus.

"While we have seen minor improvements, no one should feel good about our current COVID situation in Louisiana," said Edwards.
