Less students are enrolling in public schools throughout the state.

Officials say Louisiana's public schools have nearly 17,000 fewer students enrolled this year amid the coronavirus pandemic.

According to reports, the drops appeared in the number of students in Pre-K through 7th Grade.

The student decrease in Louisiana mirrors national trends. A survey done by Chalkbeat showed public school enrollment is down 2% among 33 states that responded, with Mississippi showing the largest decline at nearly 5%.
