Orleans Parish DA To Temporarily Quit Prosecuting Small Drug Charges

The Orleans Parish District Attorney is taking a break from prosecuting small drug charges.

On Tuesday, Jason Williams' office said that it is temporarily refusing to prosecute charges of possessing small amounts of all drugs except heroin and fentanyl.

The refusal comes as Williams' office works to clear a backlog of cases stemming from the coronavirus pandemic and the courthouse shutdown.

It's unclear if the policy will become permanent, but for now, it is temporary.
