Infectious disease experts say a new highly contagious strain of COVID-19 from India has reached Louisiana.

The Department of Health said yesterday that the new variant had been found in two patients in the northern part of the state.

This variant of the COVID-19 virus was first discovered in India and is believed to be responsible for that country's new surge in coronavirus cases.

Officials say the new variant is not more deadly but is more resistant to antibodies, making it harder to treat.
