New Orleans' city leaders are taking the first steps towards decriminalizing the possession of marijuana.

The City Council's Criminal Justice Committee met Tuesday to discuss an ordinance to avoid arrests for those possessing 14 ounces or less of marijuana.

Data shared during the meeting showed the NOPD issues around 2,700 simple possession summons every year, with 86% given to Black residents.

Committee members showed support for the ordinance, saying police officers' resources should be focusing on stopping violent crimes.
