A new report from the federal government shows that Louisiana ranked fifth in the nation last year for the worse surge in drug overdose deaths.

According to the findings, 1,930 people died in 2020 from drug overdoses compared to about 1,300 in 2019.

The East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner's Office has reported 131 deaths from overdose so far this year and officials say the number is on pace to match or exceed the 241 from last year.

Jefferson Parish Coroner Dr. Gerry Cvitanovich told NOLA.com that he's not surprised with these findings and attributes it partly to the prolonged social distancing due to the pandemic.
