Jefferson Parish deputies will soon be equipped with body cameras.

Sheriff Joe Lopinto announced on Thursday night that he's signed a contract worth nearly $9 million for the cameras, which officers will be required to wear on duty.

Lopinto said the 500 cameras are expected to be delivered in two weeks and ready for use by the middle of December.

He added that he always wanted the JPSO to use body cameras but the office couldn't afford them earlier.

Lopinto says the cameras will be phased in as officers are trained to use them.
