Phone calls in the 504 area code now require ten digits, according to the Federal Communications Commission.

The change took effect on Sunday for the 504 area code around New Orleans, as well as the 337 area code for Lafayette and Lake Charles.

Last year, the FCC established 988 as the nationwide three-digit phone number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. As a result, area codes that use 988 as a local exchange are switching to ten-digit calls.

The change also affects 80 other area codes in nearly three-dozen states.
