The Lighting of the Bonfires is returning to the River Parishes for Christmas Eve 2021.

The traditional bonfires on the levee are intended to create a lighted path for Papa Noel so he can bring Christmas joy to the kids of the River Parishes.

The event usually draws a crowd of thousands of people, but it was canceled last year because of the pandemic.

On Friday, St. James Parish officials announced that the tradition will return in their parish this year.

St. John the Baptist Parish officials followed suit on Monday.
