A New Orleans school is now designated as part of the Civil Rights Trail in Louisiana.

In November 1960, three black girls were enrolled in McDonogh 19 Elementary School, the city's first step toward school desegregation. No violence resulted but the girls endured verbal abuse.

Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser was on hand on Tuesday when a plaque was put in place to mark the school's significance.
