State health officials say they don't expect a huge spike in coronavirus cases to result from Mardi Gras festivities.

Dr. Joseph Kanter with the Louisiana Department of Health says the omicron surge is fading away and Mardi Gras isn't likely to reverse the trend.

Dr. Kanter says Carnival season may slow the current downswing, but it's too early to say.

He says families and parade-goers should either avoid large crowds or else mask up in crowded situations.
