Louisiana's COVID public health emergency will expire on Wednesday.

Gov. John Bel Edwards told legislators during Monday during an address at the start of the 2022 Legislative Session there's no reason to keep it active because virus cases are down and there are safe, effective vaccines.

He also noted there's therapeutic treatments and higher-quality masks available for people to use.

Edwards originally issued the coronavirus notice in March 2020.

The governor says he could bring it back if conditions change in the state.
